Hypotension - Wikipedia

What  Do You Mean By Blood Pressure?

The force of circulating blood on the walls of the arteries. Blood pressure is taken using two measurements: systolic (measured when the heart beats, when blood pressure is at its highest) and diastolic (measured between heart beats, when blood pressure is at its lowest).

:-Blood pressure (BP) is the pressure exerted by blood on the walls of a blood vessel that helps to push blood through the body. Systolic blood pressure measures the amount of pressure that blood exerts on vessels while the heart is beating.  Blood pressure is related to the blood velocity in the arteries and arterioles.

Maintaining a healthy blood pressure is very important because the higher your blood pressure is the higher your chances of having health issues are. All of your body's important organs, such as your brain and heart, receive nutrients and oxygen through your blood flow.

Low blood pressure (hypotension)

Low blood pressure, which can cause fainting or dizziness because the brain doesn't receive enough blood.

COMMON CAUSES

Low blood pressure can have causes that aren't due to underlying disease. Examples include family history of low blood pressure or medication side effects.

Self-treatment

Rising slowly from a sitting or lying position may help ease symptoms. Avoiding alcohol, drinking plenty of water and eating small, low-carbohydrate meals along with fruits and vegetables may also help.

SEEKING MEDICAL CARE

See a doctor immediately if you:
Faint
Break out in cold sweats
Breathe rapidly and shallowly
Notice blood in your stool.
Make an appointment to see a doctor if you:
Feel dizzy or light-headed
Experience fatigue
Have trouble concentrating
Take medication that can lower blood pressure

How to raise low blood pressure

1. Drink plenty of water

2. Eat a balanced diet
3. Eat smaller meals
4. Limit or avoid alcohol
5. Eat more salt
6. Check your blood sugar
7. Get your thyroid checked
8. Wear compression stockings
9. Treat infections
10. Take medications

Your doctor may prescribe medications to help treat low blood pressure. These drugs help to treat orthostatic hypotension:

  • fludrocortisone, which helps to raise blood volume
  • midodrine (Orvaten), which helps to narrow blood vessels to raise blood pressure

If someone’s BP is dangerously low from sepsis, other medications may be used to raise blood pressure. These include:

  • alpha-adrenoceptor agonists
  • dopamine
  • epinephrine
  • norepinephrine
  • phenylephrine
  • vasopressin analogs

High blood pressure (hypertension)

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, refers to the pressure of blood against your artery walls. Over time, high blood pressure can cause blood vessel damage that leads to heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, and other problems.
A condition in which the force of the blood against the artery walls is too high.
Usually hypertension is defined as blood pressure above 140/90, and is considered severe if the pressure is above 180/120.
High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can cause health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke.
Eating a healthier diet with less salt, exercising regularly and taking medication can help lower blood pressure.

Symptoms

Requires a medical diagnosis

High blood pressure often has no symptoms. Over time, if untreated, it can cause health conditions, such as heart disease and stroke.

Treatment consists of self care and diuretics

Self-care
Physical exercise, Stress management, Quitting smoking, Home blood pressure monitors and Low sodium diet

Medications

ACE inhibitor, Diuretic, Beta blocker, Antihypertensive drug, Calcium channel blocker and Vasodilator

If your blood pressure is elevated and you want to see an immediate change, lie down and take deep breaths. This is how you lower your blood pressure within minutes, helping to slow your heart rate and decrease your blood pressure. When you feel stress, hormones are released that constrict your blood vessels.

Citrus fruits, including grapefruit, oranges, and lemons, may have powerful blood-pressure-lowering effects. They're loaded with vitamins, minerals, and plant compounds that may help keep your heart healthy by reducing heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure
